More than 10,000 visitors are expected at the Illumin8 Festival which features light installations, cultural performances, food and market stalls and a fireworks display.
Stupa marketing and events coordinator Alyce Crosbie said the event was now in its seventh year.
"It is the second year as Illumin8. Before that it was the Festival of Light," she said.
"The event is about spreading peace and harmony and celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha.
"One of the special things is the light show on the Stupa itself. It utilises that unique building and you can't see it anywhere else.
"We are expecting a similar crowd to what we got last year which was 10,000 people over the weekend. That coincided with the homecoming of the Jade Buddha, so it was a very popular event."
Crews and volunteers have been busy all week installing the sculptures and light installations.
"The physical setup began a the start of the week but it is a good six months of plans. It's the biggest event we hold here," Ms Crosbie said.
This year Illumin8 Festival also includes an art installation created by a Stupa volunteer.
Burning The Bad is built to represent an ugly, negative being.
"People write negative thoughts emotions or experiences on paper and put them in the mouth of the sculpture," Ms Crosbie said. Then it is burnt on Saturday night to release everyone from their negative experiences."
Illumin8 is on a the Great Stupa in Sandhurst Town Rd, Myers Flat open Friday from 4pm to 8pm and on Saturday from 10am to 8pm.
