The Hawks looked down and out when Sandhurst led by 32 points five minutes into the third quarter.
However, out of nowhere the home side turned the game around.
The Borough's trademark slick ball movement, which was missing in the first half, returned and they put the tiring Dragons away with a blistering 40 minutes of football.
They kicked six of the next seven goals in the third quarter to grab a one-point lead at the final change.
The Hawks maintained that momentum in the final term, adding 4.4 to 1.3 to win 14.13 (97) to 11.11 (77).
"It's been the story of our season all year,'' Eaglehawk coach Travis Matheson said.
"Strathfieldsaye jumped us, Maryborough jumped us and Sandhurst jumped us today.
"The positive is we played a quarter-and-a-bit of footy today, kicked 10 goals in 40 minutes of footy and won the game.
"We know our best footy is good, but we need to be able to play that footy for longer in games.
"We'll take some good lessons out of the game.
"In September if things aren't going our way in a big game we'll know that we've come back before.
"We'll take some confidence out of that."
Matheson said the instructions to his players at half-time were simple.
"It came down to just beating your opponent one-on-one,'' he said.
"We played basic footy and a few good efforts here and there sparked the boys to get going."
Midfielder Dillon Williams, who was left out of the Eaglehawk side for round one, was best on ground for the second-straight week.
Cam McGlashan was instrumental in the Borough comeback after being moved into the ruck in the second half, while Joel Mulen Sam Thompson and Brodie Collins were also solid performers.
The Dragons were left to lament another heavy injury toll.
Full-forward Will Holt kicked two first quarter goals before dislocating his shoulder and he could miss anwhere from two to six weeks.
A calf injury restricted Andrew Collins to a deep forward role and a corkie restricted the game time of youngster Charlie Robinson.
Sandhurst coach Ashley Connick said his side ran out of petrol tickets.
"The first half was the best footy we've played this year,'' he said.
"We ran out of players in the second half. Losing Will Holt really hurt, Andy Collins was limited and we had two or three others carrying niggling injuries and that hurt our midfield workload.
"The work rate to get us five goals up was terrific, but it caught up with us and we were out on our feet.
"in the first half we were able to stop Eaglehawk from playing how they want to play, but we just didn't have the legs to do it in the second half.
"We don't get too down over losses and we don't too excited about wins."
Nick Stagg led from the front in the midfield for the Dragons, Jake McLean continued his good form and Martin Leyden played his best game of the season across half-back.
