Kids do better outdoors but many are spending more and more time inside, according to the Northern Bendigo Landcare Group.
But Landcare is fighting that, in its own way.
The group will run a nature play day on Saturday to give children and families a chance to enjoy the Bendigo Creek Streamside Reserve.
It wants to see kids explore the Bendigo Creek, whether that means building cubbies, or balancing on logs, splashing in the water or looking for bugs.
Secretary Nicole Howie said there was growing research saying that time spent outside is diminishing, but it is vital for kids' development.
The Nature Play Day was a chance for families to spend time together, in the environment, and meet other like-minded families, she said.
"As a Landcare group we believe the very first step to appreciating nature is just connecting with it," Ms Howie said.
"It's a really great opportunity to discover the values of the Bendigo Creek Streamside Reserve, because sometimes it's a bit of a misunderstood but hidden little gem in our town."
Nature Play Day, April 27, 9.45am, Leans Road, Huntly. People are welcome to come for any or all of the event.
