Artist Christian Wagstaff said 1000 Doors will look at the idea of loss and memory through the use of doors and transitional spaces.
"As kids, we all remember that house at the end of the street that we used to play in," Mr Wagstaff said.
"These days, everything seems to be so safe and we're not allowed to go into those abandoned spaces anymore.
"So we really wanted to create something that kids and families could enjoy, but be a little bit darker about it."
Mr Wagstaff and fellow artist Keith Courtney brought their House of Mirrors exhibition to Bendigo in 2017.
The city was the first regional centre to experience the exhibition after it was commissioned for Tasmania's Museum of Old and New Art.
"We're really thrilled to be back in Bendigo, absolutely thrilled," Mr Wagstaff said. "This was one of our highlights."
But Mr Wagstaff said this new maze of doors and corridors was a twist on their original concept.
"There was always a companion piece in the wings so the two projects are sister projects," he said. "But 1000 Doors is a much darker experience in that it's a bit more emotional and a bit more nostalgic."
The sense of smell was also a feature in the new exhibition.
"As the show travels around, we pick up pieces from the area we're in," Mr Wagstaff said.
"So there are pieces from Melbourne, a few from Auckland, and we've just picked up some random pieces from around Bendigo.
"So some of the objects in there have a sense of musk to them. There's a space that you would walk through and think oh that's like my grandma's house.
"The aroma is quite subtle. It gets under your skin but it's not in your face."
Mr Wagner and Mr Courtney said Rosalind Park was the perfect location for their latest installation.
"This is a beautiful setting," Mr Courtney said. "It's such an honour to be in such a beautiful city because in some of the other locations, we don't get to be in such a beautiful parkland."
"It's an extraordinary location for us because it is so pretty," Mr Wagstaff said.
"It's good to put something that is unexpected in a space where there is all the beautiful green grass, the surrounding trees and the old architecture.
"We're thrilled to put it amongst that."
The 1000 Doors instalment will be open to the public from April 6-28. Tickets will be available for purchase at the on-site box office.
