Bendigo Police raided a house in California Gully on Monday afternoon in an effort to locate a man in relation to stolen vehicles and petrol drive offs.
Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Rainey said a man linked to the vehicle involved in drive offs was wanted by police and had been known to possess firearms.
"Certain precautions were taken and a lockdown of the immediate Julian Way area was conducted so police could secure the area and conduct an appropriate assessment for taking action," he said.
"There was a belief that a person (wanted by police) had been linked to the vehicle (police wanted) and known to be in possession of firearms.
"We had to conduct an assessment of an entry into premises based on intelligence and the threat of people in the house with accessibility to the firearms."
Roadblocks and police checkpoints were set up in and around Julian Way in California Gully for a number of hours.
Eight police vehicles and about 15 officers were involved in the operation.
"(Police) entered the house and the person we were looking for in relation to a number of petrol drive offs, evades, disqualified driving and stolen vehicles was not present," Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Rainey said.
"No firearms were found at the address and we are continuing investigations to locate the man.
"As a result of checking through and clearing the house, there were a number of people who were checked.
"One of those persons, a male, was taken into custody on a warrant and was being interviewed by police. I am unsure whether any charges will come of that, investigations are still being undertaken."
Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Rainey said everyone was cooperative and helpful with the operation.
"We appreciate the local residents' patience," he said.
"We believe we dislodged a few people from their homes as a safety precaution until we could confirm whether this person and a firearm was at the house.
"It is an inconvenience but to ensure everyone's safety, it was something that needed to be done.
"This was a combined investigation with a number of agencies from Bendigo Police."
