UPDATE 5.20pm: The area subject to a severe weather warning for damaging winds has been extended to encompass almost the entire state.
Winds of 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of up to 90 km/h are expected to develop tonight.
EARLIER: Parts of central Victoria could experience damaging winds later tonight, with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing a severe weather warning.
Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are expected to develop on Sunday evening and overnight over elevated areas in parts of the region.
Isolated thunderstorms are expected from late afternoon.
The winds will be the result of a vigorous westerly airstream passing over the state with a strong cold front.
Maryborough and Daylesford are among the towns in the warning area.
The State Emergency Service advises that people:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony
- Keep clear of fallen power lines
