Kirkland Lake Gold community executive assistant Trudi Jackson said the annual event had surpassed expectations this year, with more than 1000 people already in attendance before 11am.
Mrs Jackson said the event gave members of the public the opportunity to see an operating gold mine and speak to staff, which numbered more than 600.
She put this year's crowd numbers down to more publicity of the mine in the wake of a successful year.
Attendees were able to take bus tours of the mine site - which included an operating processing plant and the new mine water treatment plant - learn about geology, exploration and processing, and undertake such activities as gold panning.
Among those in attendance were Darby and Lacey Wilson, who with their mum Kayla, were seeing the place where there dad worked and having a day out.
Shelley Noordennen and her sons Bastian, Brax and Spartan were also at the open day.
Relatively new arrivals to Wedderburn, she said her husband had bought a detector and they were getting interested in gold.
