Mim Williams.
I am a V/Line Train Conductor on the Bendigo line. I walk through the trains calling for tickets, assist passengers to get to from A to B, I also give the driver permission to leave by indicating when all passengers have safely boarded.
How long have you been doing that for?
April will mark my fifth year as a conductor with V/Line.
What are you doing today?
Today my alarm went off at 03:30 and I walked to work to run the first train out of Bendigo at 0507. To ensure the train (and myself) are ready to go on time I have to be at work 30 minutes before the departure time.
When I arrived in Melbourne, the driver and I grabbed a quick coffee and headed straight back to Bendigo. Now I catch up on any training I have to do, check in with my manager and I am home for lunch. No doubt, a sneaky nap will be taken mid-afternoon.
Why did you decide to become a conductor?
I joined V/Line at 19 and have done a few different jobs around the state over the last decade but when my sister announced her pregnancy five years ago, I took the first job available in Bendigo. I have not looked back!
I see different people every day, I am asked so many diverse questions and see something new every time I head out on the train. There is so much variety - you can never get bored.
What do you enjoy about your job?
The people I get to meet. I have met everyone from judges and professors to carpenters and apprentice mechanics and they all have something they can share. I have learnt so much from all of them, including how to change my oil.
What is your passion, what do you really care about?
Bendigo! This community may not be where I was born but it is my home. This is why I have become involved in the Bendigo Winter Night Shelter.
I found out about this program through my church, and I could not be more excited about what the church and broader community are doing for people going it rough. We need many volunteers from within the community to make it happen though.
What's your Bendigo story?
Hmm, Bendigo has so much to offer it's hard to pick one story. There is something happening every day here so I'm looking forward to a lifetime exploring everything.
One thing I really want to do though is the Nine Levels of Darkness tour at the central Deborah Goldmine. Friends, family take note...this would make a great birthday present.
What do you do on your Saturday morning?
It depends if I have work or not. If not, probably a sleep in, play with my pet rabbits and do some sort of craft project. I'd like to say I go for a run but somehow something always comes up...
What's your guilty pleasure TV show?
I actually don't watch television...the only time it gets switched on now is if the Boston Bruins are playing. I'm a mad ice hockey fan and I watch the game whenever I can.
