CFA crews in the area have responded to a number of false alarms, where people have seen dust columns in combination with the smoke.
They have included an incident in Sedgwick and one on Barfold. Crews have responded to both in the last two hours.
The BOM's satellite imagery was not picking up heavy smoke movement across the state, but there was a light easterly wind and a bushfire not yet under control in Mccready Track, near Whitfield.
An air quality warning has been Benalla, Mansfield, Bright and Beechworth but did not extend further west to central Victoria.
There were multiple bushfires burning throughout state's east, according to VicEmergency.
