Endless hours in the workshop with hands covered in grease and thousands of dollars later - and it all boils down to 10 seconds of flat-out racing.
Hundreds of motorsport enthusiasts will race at the 2019 Holden Nationals at the Heathcote Park Raceway on April 6.
The nationals were created by motorsport enthusiast Todd Foley.
Foley initially sent out a Facebook message to the Victorian drag racing community to see if there was any interest in holding a national Holden drag racing meet.
After a swell of interest the event is now in its fourth year, and it keeps growing every year.
"We contacted Heathcote Park Raceway management about holding the event - and we haven't looked back since," Foley said.
"The first year we had around 50 entrants, and we're growing by another 50 each year.
"And spectators are also increasing every year by around 500 people each year."
Entrants race on a dial your own format, which is essentially a handicap to equalise competitors- ensuring close finishes.
"This type of racing is designed for crowds," Foley said.
"If all the drivers run as close as what they say they will- there will only be a few metres difference at the finish line."
Hundreds of competitors have entered, racing in a range of Holden engine and chassis vehicles.
