Long Gully resident Jonathan Peterson was charged with attempted armed robbery and intentionally causing serious injury after the incident on December 29 last year.
A man was walking along a path near Eaglehawk Road in Long Gully late in the evening when Mr Peterson allegedly approached him and asked for a cigarette and $5 dollars.
More court news:
Police alleged Mr Peterson pulled out a small knife and punched and stabbed the victim to the face and chest, leaving him with injuries the responding paramedics assessed as potentially life-threatening.
On Wednesday, magistrate Sarah Leighfield set a date of July 2 for a one-day contested committal hearing and granted the defence leave to cross-examine their requested witnesses.
Mr Peterson's lawyer Jacob Mildren said the defence would not be prepared to proceed without the results from blood DNA analysis, but indicated the results were due to return before the committal date.
Mr Peterson remains in custody.
