Johnstone has joined 2017 Bulldogs' best and fairest winner Tom Toma at Cohuna, while defender Michael Dalrymple is also heading to the Central Murray league to play with Kerang.
Johnstone kicked 85 goals in his first season with the Bulldogs in 2016, before his form dropped off slightly in 2017 and 2018 where he kicked 42 and 36 goals respectively.
Johnstone's departure puts extra pressure on Jayden Burke and veteran Travis Baird to hold down the key forward posts, while emerging forward Jordan Rosengren is returning to the club after one year in Geelong.
Dalrymple played 35 games in two seasons with the Bulldogs where he was a reliable member of the club's back six.
He previously won the Berry Powell Medal as league best and fairest while playing for Newstead in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League.
Dalrymple's exit might force coach Bernie Haberman to swing Jon Coe back to defence. Coe, a premiership defender, made a strong impact as a big-bodied midfielder in 2018.
Meanwhile, 2015 Michelsen Medal winner Brodie Filo has helped Nightcliff to victory in the Northern Territory Football League grand final.
Filo and Eaglehawk recruit Clayton Holmes were in the Tigers' team which defeated Southern Districts by 22 points in Saturday night's grand final in Darwin.
Filo's premiership medal expands a growing football CV that includes three prestigious individual awards - the Michelsen Medal, 2017 Nicholls Medal in the NTFL and the 2018 Morris Medal in the Ovens and Murray Football League.
Holmes, a classy defender, joins the Borough from Cohuna.
