The parade was part of the 10-day-long festival of cultural activities in Eaglehawk, now in its 48^th year.

It began in 1972 to promote what was then the Borough of Eaglehawk.

Dahlia and Arts Festival committee president David Richards said the number of volunteers was incredible.

It took about 280 volunteers to make the event happen.

"There's 19 activities in this festival this year. Everyone of those activities is run by volunteers, a team of people," Mr Richards said.

"That's pretty special, to get that many volunteers, it's incredible."

Mr Richards joked he was "sucked in" to helping organise the festival 20 years ago. He's now been president of the committee for 16 or 17 years.

He said the festival was a chance for the Eaglehawk community to gather.

"We just love getting together and having a great time, and that's basically what the Dahlia and Arts is all about. Just the quality time together," Mr Richards said.

Hundreds of people lined High Street in Eaglehawk, to watch as community groups marched.

Former primary teacher Meryl Young had come a few streets from her home to watch the parade with friends.

"It's a whole package deal. Everyone comes and they meet people they haven't seen for years," Ms Young said.

"It just brings the community together."

Eaglehawk's St Liborius Primary School had organised the fair which followed the parade.

Vice-principal Carmelina Pell said the school saw the event as an ideal fundraiser.

"It's a fantastic community event. Good for Eaglehawk good, for our school community," Mrs Pell said. 

"A good fundraiser for us, and great to get parents involved."
