The shire has more than 100 volunteers helping with deliveries but are in need of extra help for Wycheproof.

Buloke Shire has are between 40 and 50 clients who participate in the service according to their needs across its area at any one time.

The number changes often but daily deliveries on Monday to Friday in the shire's major town of Birchip, Charlton, Donald, Wycheproof and Sea Lake.

Last week 179 meals were delivered across Buloke.

The service aims to support and enhance the well-being and independence of older people as well as providing social contact.

Meals are produced according to Home and Community Care guidelines with the majority of providers offering a soup, main course, dessert and a vitamin C supplement usually fruit juice.

Buloke Shire mayor Carolyn Stewart said volunteering was a way of life in rural areas.

"Volunteerism is an essential part of what makes Buloke a great place to live," she said.

"Our shire enjoys one of the highest rates of volunteerism in the state (with) locals helping locals for a better way of life."

Meals on Wheels services can be provided for a short time, like recovering after surgery, but in most cases meals are provided on‐going for people who are unable to prepare food for themselves.

"Any time you can give is precious, even two hours a month can make an enormous difference," Cr Stewart said.

“We encourage people to get involved. Whatever your situation, volunteering is a great opportunity to show you care about your community."

A Buloke Shire spokesperson said while Meals on Wheels' meals being delivered by council-supported volunteers was important, the social connection was just as necessary for some clients.

"The social connection that comes through the volunteer delivering the meal is just as important as the food in many cases," the spokesperson said.

"It offers a great entry into volunteering for people who have never volunteered before and can even fit inside a lunch break for working people."
