At a lap to go it was Anne Buckley and Leigh Browell who led the way.
Browell surged to the front at less than 200 metres to race, but it was Boyd who timed his run perfectly to win the Athletics Bendigo classic.
University’s Andy Buchanan raced from the backmark of 2.38 and was fastest in 3.58.

Meanwhile, Aaron Downes sprinted hard over the concluding stages to win Saturday's Bendigo Umoona Opal Mine and Museum 800m Open.
Racing off a handicap of 66m, Downes ran down Tom Hecimovic (128m), with former Sandhurst footballer Peter O'Farrell (122m) a close-up third.
Just 0.108 of a second separated the first three runners, with Downes winning in a time of 1:51.659.
Sean Quilty, who represented Australia in the marathon at the 1996 Olympics, was sixth off a handicap of 112m.
Dhru Rodrigues Chico ran a slick 7.535 seconds in winning the 70m Open final.
Rodrigues Chico (3.25m) chased down Aaron Leferink (4m) and Parvinder Singh Bajwa (6m).
