BENDIGO Harriers’ young gun Antonio Vaitohi sprinted to gold in the weekend’s start to the Athletics Victoria open and junior track and field championships in Melbourne.

The Goulburn Valley-based athlete scorched the Lakeside Stadium track as he won the under-17 100m in 10.74 seconds.
The Flack Advisory Bendigo Region was represented by athletes from South Bendigo, Bendigo Harriers, Bendigo University, and Eaglehawk.
Silver medallists were South Bendigo’s Emma Berg in the open and under-20 discus, and Eaglehawk’s Lachlan Start in the under-20 javelin.
From Swan Hill, Berg’s outstanding season rolled on.
In the open discus, Berg achieved a mark of 45.65 metres, and hit the 44.97m mark in the under-20 discus contests.
Start hurled the discus to a mark of 49.06m.
The Charlton-based athlete played a key role in Eaglehawk’s charge to again being the number one team at the Victoria Country titles held in Bendigo last January.
Start’s leap of 13.73m in the triple jump earned fifth place in the state finals.
Four bronze medals were won by Bendigo region stars.
South Bendigo’s Tarryn Furletti raced to third place in the under-17 2000m steeplechase in 7:32.91.
A great weekend for the Vaitohi family included third placings for Christian Moala Vaitohi in the under-14 100m, 12.67 seconds; and under-14 400m, 59.02.
Hill hoisted the javelin to a mark of 25.53m to be third in the under-15 class.
Other finalists were Eaglehawk’s James Bentley, Jamie Harrison, Laura Kadri, Jorja Morrison, Siobhan Thompson; University’s Anthony Messerle; Bendigo Harriers’ Gretel Holmes, James Miller, Ben Powell, Cooper Saunders; South Bendigo’s Sara Berg, Scarlett Southern and Megan Wilson.
Jorja Peace and Danai Mahachi from Bendigo Harriers, South Bendigo’s Sara Berg and Mackenzie Southern; and Eaglehawk’s Maya Kadri also competed at the meet.
Formerly with Bendigo Harriers, Liam Schreck and Fraser Symons also performed well.
Racing in the Melbourne University colours, Schreck contested the open 100m, discus, and 100m hurdles where a time of 17.38 earned sixth place.
Symons added to the Old Melburnians’ success as he ran the under-20 400m in 49.10 to be fifth across the line.
