"They’re more than accepted in the industry, but I think it’s a very physical job," Mr Carmody.
He was pleased with the turnout at the event, which was packed with families and spectators.
Since its beginning in 2014, the event has grown and grown.
"It’s unreal. A little town like this, and you get a roll up like this," Mr Carmody said.
It’s getting more popular for women shearers nowadays. It’s good to get them into it as much as possible.
- Holly Courtney
"It’s a bit of an opportunity to have a bit of a community get together and raise a few funds for the local school, and kinder and fire brigade and the hall committee.
"We’re trying to make it a bit of a family day out."
Heathcote-based shearer Holly Courtney won the junior category at the quick shear.
Ms Courtney began shearing in New Zealand, so she could travel.
With it she's been to England, Australia and New Zealand. Ms Courtney mainly works as a roustabout, but she's working towards getting her 200 in England this year.
Ms Courtney plans to keep up shearing when she begins study by correspondence next year.
She was feeling good after a win in her first event, which was judged by how clean the shear is.
Ms Courtney said it was good to see more women shearers getting into the field.
"It’s getting more popular for women shearers nowadays. It’s good to get them into it as much as possible," Ms Courtney said.
Axedale shearer Dave Ticehurste was about to compete in the intermediate class.
"I just want to take a deep breath and shear one as well as I can. A good time probably is 35-45 second," Mr Ticehurste said.
"I’ve competed nearly every year since the inaugural Axedale Speed Shear, and it just seems to get bigger every year."
