The Bendigo Advertiser understands two trains were held as firefighters responded.
It is believed there were residual delays of about 20 - 30 minutes, mostly affecting services heading towards Melbourne.
Update, 5.26pm: THE fire has been marked safe.
V/Line has been contacted for comment about the impact on train services.
EARLIER: FIREFIGHTERS are responding to reports of fire along the train line at Elphinstone.
A Country Fire Authority spokesperson said a sleeper along the line was smouldering.
They believed the fire was between Railway Dam Road and Tunnel Hill Track.
Firefighters received the call about 5pm.
