COACH Shane Koop outlines the roles for each of the 13 players who will represent the Bendigo District Cricket Association at Melbourne Country Week starting Monday against Goulburn Murray at Greenvale.
………………………………….
BEN DeARAUGO (C)
MCW runs: 533 @ 18.3
MCW wickets: 62 @ 20.8
“Ben will captain the side and brings a lot of experience and leadership. He’s a proven big-game player who will bat in the middle-order and could also be a bowling option depending on conditions and the workloads of others. He’s a great person and passionate about representing the BDCA.”
………………………………….
ADAM BURNS
MCW runs: 449 @ 18.7
MCW wickets: 115 @ 16.8
“Another who brings plenty of Country Week experience, and because we’re using the Dukes ball for the first time, we’ll be looking for him to expose the swing with the new ball. He’s also a very handy player to have coming in with the bat late in the order. He’s still as fit as ever and really wants to impart his knowledge.”
………………………………….
ANDREW CHALKLEY
MCW runs: 57 @ 14.2
“Andrew will bat at No.4 for us. He will provide some knowledge on the Melbourne wickets and grounds given he’s played a lot of cricket down there. We’ll be looking for him to really move the game forward for us when he’s batting and is also a very good catcher and sharp in the field.”
………………………………….
ASH GRAY (VC)
Debut carnival
“Ash is our vice-captain who was part of the Victoria Country team last month. He will bat in the middle-order and has the ability to take the game apart with his power hitting. He’s a back-up wicket-keeper for us as well.”
………………………………….
DYLAN KLEMM
MCW wickets: 1 @ 42.0
“Dylan will be our first genuine pace option, we’ll just have to see if that’s opening up or as a change bowler. This is his second time to Melbourne Country Week and a great growth opportunity for a talented young player. We will be looking to utilise his raw pace and, hopefully, he can impact with some early wickets.”
………………………………….
JACK NEYLON
Debut carnival
“Jack will open the batting for us initially, but could also bat in the middle-order during the week depending on how we’re travelling. He’s another of our youth selections given he’s still under 21, but we see him as a really big part of our representative future going forward.”
………………………………….
JAKE KLEMM
MCW runs: 10 @ 2.5
“Jake has an important role batting at No.3. He’s obviously had a fantastic season at Bendigo United with more than 500 runs. We’ll be looking for him to just play his natural game because he’s a player who can really move the game along in those early overs when the field is up.”
………………………………….
LIAM SMITH
MCW runs: 12 @ 12.0
MCW wickets: 16 @ 17.1
“Liam is so consistent with his left-arm orthodox spin. He has a great ability to contain, is fantastic in the field and his experience from playing with the Greenvale Kangaroos in the Vic Super Slam this year is going to be really handy given we are playing at Greenvale on the first day.”
………………………………….
MITCH WINTER-IRVING
Debut carnival
“Mitch is in great form and will open the batting. He seems to be really content with his game at the moment; he’s relaxed and confident and, hopefully, that continues for him during the week. He’ll probably bowl four or five overs a day as well, but his primary role for us will be with the bat.”
………………………………….
RHYS IRWIN
MCW wickets: 2 @ 16.5
“Rhys gives us plenty of flexibility with the bat. He can bat up high or through the middle as well, but he has been picked mainly as a bowler. He has great wicket-taking ability, always tends to get the best players out from the opposition and bowls a really attacking line, plus a good back of the length ball that has traditionally worked well on Melbourne wickets.”
………………………………….
RUSSELL STOCKDALE
Debut carnival
“In my opinion Russell has been the recruit of the year in the BDCA for Eaglehawk. He’s a leg-spinner who varies his flight and speed and has the ability to spin the ball both ways. He will bat in the middle to lower-order and is also fantastic in the field with his game awareness and energy.”
………………………………….
RYAN HARTLEY
Debut carnival
“Ryan will be our wicket-keeper and also brings a lot of Premier Cricket experience to the side. He’ll probably bat in the middle to lower-order for us. Having played a lot of cricket on Melbourne grounds and wickets that knowledge he has is going to be really important from behind the stumps with the angles for field placements.”
………………………………….
SCOTT TROLLOPE
Debut carnival
“Scott has come in for the injured Sam Johnston and will play a role with both bat and ball. He will bat in the middle-order and bowl those crucial overs through the middle of the innings. It’s great for him to get an opportunity because he has been such a consistent performer at Golden Square.”
