Martin shot a one-under par 71 in Friday's second round to be three-under and in a tie for 24th.
Starting his second round on the 10th hole, Martin birdied the 13th and 17th to be four-under par for the tournament. A bogey on the par-four first hole saw him slip back to three-under before he finished with eight-straight pars.
The former Australian amateur champion needs to be inside the top 24 at the completion of Saturday's third round to qualify for Sunday's matchplay format.
Meanwhile, after finishing third in this event last year, Lucas Herbert packed his bags early.
Herbert finished two-over par after 36 holes - three shots outside the halfway cut.
After shooting a two-over 74 on Thursday, Herbert fired an even-par 72 on Friday.
A brilliant chip-in eagle on the par-five seventh gave Herbert's round some momentum, but he failed to build on it on the back nine.
