Four CFA trucks were called to the Bendigo Creek, near Goornong, last night from 8.30pm, a spokesperson said.
They had no information about the substance found at the creek, but said it was found in a container and that CFA quickly contained it and made the area safe.
Thursday, 9.41pm: Emergency services have issued a hazardous materials alert for the Bendigo Creek, near Goornong.
Services are on scene near Mayreef Road, after an unknown substance was found in the creek.
People are asked to keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond to the incident.
