David Main pleaded guilty in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court to the offence committed last April.
Main was found with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.162 after he pulled into a breath-testing station on the McIvor Highway at Strathdale.
He told police he consumed four schooners of beer prior to driving and he "got it wrong".
More court news:
The court heard the winemaker drove from Heathcote to Bendigo to have a coffee, then a friend told him a winemakers festival was on.
But he had not arranged an alternative means home after drinking.
Magistrate Patrick Southey said Main had taken the matter seriously by engaging a lawyer and noted he had no prior convictions.
Mr Southey cancelled Main's licence and disqualified him from driving for 16 months.
Main was also convicted and fined $500.
