Sheep and lambs
Monday, February 11.
Yarding: 20,630. Change: down 2870.
Lambs: 14,280. Change: down 3720.
Sheep: 6350. Change: up 850.
Lamb numbers eased to 14,280 head or close to 4000 less.
There was no extra heavy export lambs over 30kg cwt, with more of the market comprising lighter weight and store lambs.
Competition from processors remained irregular, with some still not operating and others not purchasing to capacity.
After a soft opening, the market did improve to record a slightly stronger trend compared to a week ago.
The highlight was restocker competition.
Volume orders from Swan Hill, Wycheproof and Lake Cargelligo in New South Wales pushed the main lines of store lambs $10 to $20/head dearer.
With no extra heavy lambs on offer, the market top this week was $200/head.
The heavy lambs in the 26-30kg cwt category improved by $6 to $10 to average an estimated 640c/kg cwt, with most sales from $176 to $196/head.
There was little price movement over trade weight lambs, which continued to sell from approximately 630c to 650c/kg for most.
The best of the 24-26kg cwt lambs made from $150 to $174 to average close to $165, while the next grade down at 22-24kg cwt sold from $144 to $164/head.
Processor demand was still selective, however, and odd pen lots, secondary types and unshorn full fleeced lambs continued to struggle.
Restocker competition was much stronger and the main lines of quality shorn store lambs sold from $111 to $130 to average $123/head to the paddock at close to 700c/kg cwt.
The smallest store lambs, under 12kg cwt, averaged $75/head and showed the biggest lift in price.
It was a plainer yarding of sheep, with less weight and condition now coming through the market.
There were only minor price changes of a few dollars either side of last week, with the bulk of the sheep estimated to cost processors from 340c to 380c/kg cwt.
The heavy crossbred ewes sold from $94 to $122.
The bigger framed Merinos made from $94 to $106/head.
A run of trade weight Merino ewes sold from $79 to $105 and averaged $90/head to match last week.
Very plain and light sheep sold from $15 to $68/head.
The next sheep and lamb sale at Bendigo is on Monday, February 18.
