There’s been a lot of chatter about the heat in recent weeks, which I always find surprising in January and February – after all, it is summer. But it is concerning that our hottest days seems to be getting warmer – and we are breaking Bureau of Meteorology records.
The Climate Council this week said a ‘new normal’ was happening in Australia.
Here, journalist Tom O’Callaghan writes that Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie says the federal government’s policies have been an “abject failure”. She is calling for a “credible national policy” to drive down greenhouse gas production in agriculture, land use transport and industry.
It was nice to have a cooler change this weekend, and a drop of rain – albeit not enough in many parts of the country.
The timing didn’t dampen the spirits of those attending the 10 year Black Saturday anniversary commemorations on Marong Road, though. While it was a time for reflection, it was also an occasion to share positive stories and hope.
There is no doubt that in the days, weeks and months that followed Black Saturday, there were many stories to tell about how our community pulled together.
Many of us in the media were there to capture some of those stories, and we too will never forget the darkness that fell over Victoria on February 7, 2009 – but also the light that followed.
Our thoughts this week were, and always will be, with those from Bendigo, Redesdale and beyond who were directly affected by that day – and in particular, the family and friends of Mick Kane.
In other news this week, the Addy revealed how documents detailing private and confidential information about clients, staff and volunteers of the former Radius Disability Services were left in a disused building that is frequently entered and vandalised.
In sport, central Victorian race horse owners involved with the popular Roll The Dice Racing syndications will have their horses transferred to new trainers. You can read more about that, and other sport stories making headlines this week, below.
We would love your feedback on some of our content – so feel free to email me with your thoughts.
Have a great week,
Nicole
