CHARLIE Douglas was No.1 in 1939-40 and Caelan Smith the most recent at No.433 last weekend for Sandhurst.
The Dragons are this weekend reflecting on their club history with a gala ball function that will include a number cap presentation.
Following an extensive research project, the Dragons have allocated a cap number to every player who has represented the club’s first XI in the Bendigo District Cricket Association.
Douglas has the honour of the No.1 cap having been listed first alphabetically in the Dragons’ team for their inaugural BDCA first XI game in 1939-40.
According to the records of BDCA historian Darren Rodda, Douglas played just four first XI games for the Dragons, making 17 runs and taking no wickets.
Teenager Smith last week became the most recent Sandhurst first XI debutant and cap No.433 when he took to the field against Golden Square, making five not out.
Saturday night’s gala function at Weeroona Oval will also include a reunion of the club’s back-to-back premiership teams of 1977-78 and 1978-79.
The Dragons (5-250) beat Bendigo (209) by 41 runs in the 1977-78 grand final, which include a double of 92 and 3-63 from Robert Court.
Court was again influential in the grand final the following season with 61 and 4-41 as Sandhurst (5-250) belted Eaglehawk (103) by 147 runs to make it consecutive flags.
The 1978-79 premiership was the Dragons’ last flag until the club broke a 39-year drought last season, while the Hawks would go on to play in the next 13 grand finals, winning nine of them.
