Bendigo police are calling for witnesses to the assault on Napier Street Sunday.

The woman and another female aged in her 70s were stopped at an intersection near a stretch of roadworks when a man got out of his red ute and punched her, Senior Constable Holly Lembke said.

The victim told police she was not sure why it happened and could only guess that it came after she overtook a vehicle from the inside lane.

“There’s two lanes of traffic heading north on Napier Street, so that is acceptable to do,” Senior Constable Lembke said.

“He’s come up behind her and she has noticed he has parked really close. He has then got out of the car and yelled at her.”

The woman was left with a headache but no visible injuries when she reported the assault at the Bendigo police station.

The window of the convertible was up and Senior Constable Lembke said the man’s fist appeared to have hit it, absorbing some of the force of the punch.

“If it had not hit the window first she would have copped the full force,” she said.

Police wanted to speak to a Caucasian man believed in his 50s with a medium build. He was driving a red ute.

Senior Constable Lembke said it was one of two road rage incidents she personally dealt with yesterday.

The other did not become violent but also involved a man acting aggressively towards an older woman.

“Not everybody drives at the same speed or has the same quick instincts as others. Maybe they are a bit more cautious,” Senior Lembke said.

“They need to be respected on the roads.”
