Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire at Burrowes Street, which is being treated as suspicious.
No one was injured during the incident.
Alternative accommodation was arranged for neighbours on either side of the unit, who were grateful their homes were not also engulfed in flames.
One of the neighbours said he had been considering getting some sleep about the time the fire started.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
UPDATE, 1.55pm: A CFA spokesperson on the scene confirmed the fire was out and may be suspicious.
They said no one was inside the unit when the fire started.
UPDATE, 1.40pm: Kathy Jackson who lives nearby said she saw smoke and flames coming out the windows of the unit.
She said she saw one man running from the house while carrying a dog, while another man was carrying a bird.
“It was pretty big. If had just started it had taken off pretty quick. Hopefully no one was inside,” she said.
