MORE CRICKET – Colbinabbin knocks over Elmore in major NUCA upset
SEDGWICK has opened up a decisive 24-point gap at the top of the EVCA ladder after winning a low-scoring one-day game against Emu Creek on Saturday.
Sedgwick kept its unblemished record intact as it won by 11 runs in the battle of two of the flag fancies.
The Rams were knocked over for 109 after winning the toss and batting in an innings where only opener Greg Thomas (43) made more than 12 as he lifted his season tally to 412 runs.
Having one stage been 5-92, the Rams’ last five wickets tumbled for just 17 runs.
The best with the ball for the Emus was opening bowler Anthony Collins (4-13).
Apart from a 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Jeremy Brown (48) and Julian Lake (14), the Emus were never able to gather any momentum in their innings as they were bowled out for 98 in reply.
The Emus were 3-8 early and later lost 4-3, falling from 3-69 to 7-72.
Jordan Ilsley (3-19) and Quinton Bentley (3-23) both took three wickets apiece for the Rams, while Andrew Sheehan (1-18) removed the dangerous Brown, whose 48 came off just 36 balls.
The Emus had four players make ducks in their innings.
• Mandurang extended its buffer inside the top four to 24 points with a six-wicket win over West Bendigo.
Jeremy Hancock (4-18) was the standout with the ball as Mandurang dismissed the Redbacks for 171.
The Redbacks’ four leading run-scorers this season contributed just 17 runs between them – Travis O’Connell (4), Darren De Marchi (0), Tarran Kilcullen (9) and Gary Singh (4).
Instead, the bulk of the Redbacks’ runs came from Matt Gould (56), who hit nine boundaries in his first division one knock of the season, and Zac Makeham (39).
Rangas’ opener Phil Berry carried his bat through the innings in reply, finishing unbeaten on 76 off 92 with 12 boundaries as Mandurang took 30 overs to reach 4-173 and win its fourth game.
• Maiden Gully won its second game of the season, and in doing so kept California Gully winless.
Batting first, the Cobras were dismissed for 129 following an even bowling performance from the Lions, who had Alex Gorrie (3-26), Rob Brown (2-16) and Mitchell Van Poppel (2-22) all multiple wicket-takers.
Mick Galvin and Brad Olson both made 24 to top score for the Cobras.
The Cobras gave themselves a genuine sniff of recording their first win when the Lions stumbled in their chase from 0-46 to 5-49.
However, the experienced Dallas Gill (40 n.o.) and impressive youngster Angus Chisholm (32 n.o.) – who is now averaging 55.6 for the season – guided Maiden Gully over the line with an unbroken 82-run partnership, taking the Lions to 5-131.
Brad Webster (3-38) was the best of the bowlers for California Gully, while Olson (1-9 off 7) was economical.
