Police were managing traffic near the Alexandra Fountain this morning after a white Mitsubishi sedan attempted to turn right from Mitchell Street into Pall Mall about 10.30am.

Bendigo Highway Patrol Sergeant Mick McCrann said the driver failed to stop at a red light, colliding with a north-bound green Holden sedan driven by a 43-year-old man from Ballarat, who had three children in the back.

“Fortunately, the children were properly restrained in the vehicle,” the sergeant said.

The Mitsubishi driver, an 83-year-old woman from Bendigo, was treated at the scene for chest pain, which police believe was related to a pre-existing medical condition.

Sergeant McCrann said the woman was taken to Bendigo Hospital for observation and later discharged.

He said the crash resulted in some minor traffic issues.

Police will issue the driver with a $408 fine and deduct three demerit points from her license. 

Sergeant McCrann said several witnesses confirmed the Mitsubishi ran a red light.

“We are grateful to them for coming forward,” he said.
