The Dwyer-trained Hay Now surged late to win the Byron Moore Handicap (1400m) by a nose.
It was Dwyer’s first win at Flemington since his smart two-year-old Villa Verde blew her rivals away to win the Listed Ottawa Stakes (1000m) on Melbourne Cup day in 2012.
“It’s great to win a race at Flemington, it’s been a little while,’’ Dwyer said.
Hay Now was having her third start for Dwyer after previously being trained in Sydney.
”She had a bleeding attack in Sydney, but she came here, had a good spell and she’s been terrific,’’ Dwyer said.
“My daughter (Sally) rides her in all her work. It’s a great result.”
Apprentice jockey Liam Riordan produced a well-timed run on Hay Now to nail Set To Sparkle right on the finish line.
Hay Now now boasts a career record of five wins and eight placings from 19 starts.
