Bendigo Pioneers and Sandhurst midfielder Flynn Perez tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee at a Victoria Country Academy training session and underwent a knee reconstruction.
Bendigo Pioneers talent manager Steve Sharp said while the injury was disappointing for Perez, he expects the smooth moving midfielder to still come under heavy notice from AFL clubs at national draft time next November.
“Flynn ticked a lot of boxes as a 17-year-old,’’ Sharp said.
“His commitment to his footy was outstanding and, even though he has this injury, AFL clubs would have seen a lot of positive signs.
“He was very good for the Pioneers and he played well in the Future Stars game on AFL grand final day at the MCG.
“It’s disappointing that he won’t play footy in 2019, but he’s positioned himself very well with what he’s already shown.
“Flynn has displayed some great leadership skills and we’ll keep him in the group as much as we can.”
Earlier this month Perez impressed Geelong skipper Joel Selwood when he trained with the Cats.
"He's a nice mover and a great size,’’ Selwood said of Perez.
Perez played 15 games with the Pioneers in 2018 and also made his BFNL senior debut with Sandhurst.
