It comes as the National Retail Association’s Dominique Lamb said the sector had got through a challenging year with strong sales over Christmas.
Be.Bendigo CEO Dennis Bice on Monday said he had noticed heavy traffic around town in the lead up to Christmas, which he hoped was a sign people had been spending big.
Online sales have also surged, Australia Post’s Bob Black said. Close to three million parcels were delivered nationwide on December 17 alone, which was a new record.
The NRA is predicting a stampede to the shops for Boxing Day. It is anticipating a record $2.49 million in sales on the busiest day of the retail calendar.
Be.Bendigo is preparing to release results of a Bendigo business trends survey in the new year and Mr Bice said the results would show members had a generally positive outlook on future growth and employment.
