Mr José will start with BCHS in early 2019, when current CEO Kim Sykes finishes.
Ms Sykes announced she would retire in September, after more than eight years as CEO.
BCHS Board of Directors chair Geoff Bowyer said the board was confident Mr José had the experience and leadership skills to ensure BCHS continued to grow and continue to support the community.
“Gerard impressed the board with his strong background in leadership and strong affiliation with regional Victoria,” Mr Bowyer said.
“We believe Gerard is a very engaging leader who will draw on the strengths of existing staff and further those strengths. He will be a great mentor.”
Mr José said he was looking forward to the new position, but it was with sadness that he would leave the Mallee.
He comes to the role after four years as CEO of Mildura Rural City Council.
Mr José said the board of BCHS had impressed him with their passion to work in partnership with others in the region to create healthier outcomes and meet needs.
