Both teams had a solid start to the game with the Spirit taking a three-point lead over the Fire at quarter time 23-20.
The Fire came back strong in the second quarter, by unloading 26 points onto the scoreboard in comparison to the Spirit’s 17, to take the lead 46-40 at half time.
After the half time break the Spirit made adjustments “on the run” to cover the Fire’s Laurin Mincy, who was proving to be a dominant force on the court, finishing the game with 30 points.
The Spirit were able to limit the Fire to only six points during the third quarter, while able to add 17 points to the scoreboard to take the lead 57-52.
The momentum of both sides remained strong during the fourth quarter, with the Spirit outlasting the Fire to take an eight point victory.
“It was nice to be back on the home court where we are comfortable and with all of our fans,” coach Simon Pritchard said.
“Really shows the chemistry of the team by the way they carried themselves and played defence.”
One of the Spirit’s strengths was the team’s ability to catch rebounds throughout the game, finishing with 47 in total – 15 by Becca Tobin – compared to the Fire’s 28.
“Tobin was tireless with rebounds and Nadeen Payne attacked stronger than in previous games,” Pritchard said.
“And with our structure Nat Hurst was able to get some space on the court, more than she did last time we played the Fire.”
Spirit’s top scorers were Nadeen Payne 21, Becca Tobin 16, Kara Tessari 11 and Louella Tomlinson 10.
“When we needed a couple of points Kara made some good reads and made some baskets, which turned out to be two very important three-pointers,” Pritchard said.
“Only shame is we’re 2-1 against the Fire. However, the win will make it more difficult for them to make finals and it keeps us in the race.
“Really happy with the team’s effort.”
Spirit’s next game will be at the Bendigo Stadium against Melbourne Boomers on Saturday December 29, tip-off at 3pm.
