Update, 10.05am
Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said damage to the two vehicles suggested speed was a factor in the fatal crash.
“The damage and the marks on the road say there is going to be an element of speed in it. How much? We don’t know yet,” he said.
“With any crash in this type of circumstance, we will always look at whether drugs and alcohol are involved, we’ll look to see if there was a distraction like a phone. That’s standard process for any crash.
“To be able to say that this or that caused the crash at this early stage would be pretty foolish but there is definitely elements of speed to it.”
The crash occurred about 1.30am on Monday at the intersection of Somerville and Keck streets.
Detective Sergeant Amos said the white Ford was travelling south on Somerville Street when it collided with the white truck at the Keck Street intersection.
“As a result of that a 21-year-old North Bendigo women has suffered fatal injuries and died,” he said.
“The 20-year-old driver of the Ford was taken to Bendigo and transferred to Melbourne and is currently with police.
“Two men from the Iveco truck are local residents and suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Bendigo hospital.”
