DANIEL Reid’s appointment as AFL Central Victoria’s new football development manager is a case of one door opening, but another shutting.
While it’s a new job opportunity for Reid, the position means he has had to stand down as co-coach of Loddon Valley league club Calivil United.
Prior to his new role with AFLCV Reid had been appointed co-coach of the Demons with Andrew Freemantle.
“The reasoning behind the decision is that part of the role is to be able to visit clubs and volunteers in our region… most of which are available on the same nights and that’s a training night,” AFLCV region manager Carol Cathcart said on Saturday.
“It’s very hard for a coach to have to miss training on a regular basis to be able to attend work, whereas it’s a bit easier for a player who isn’t required to run training.

“So AFL Victoria’s policy around this is ensuring priorities are work and that clubs and volunteers receive the support that the role entails. “
While he won’t be coaching the Demons in 2019, Reid will continue to play with the club that he joined as a mid-season recruit this year.
Calivil United has indicated it’s keen to explore the possibility of appointing another co-coach alongside Freemantle.
“Reidy has done an amazing job over the past three months recruiting and taking pre-season and has got the footy back on track to be competitive in 2019. Thanks for your hard work,” the Demons said in a Facebook post announcing Reid stepping down.
“Fortunately, he can still be a player and can’t wait to don the blue and red for another season.”

Reid’s position at AFLCV fills the vacancy created by Jamie Macri’s departure to AFL Goulburn Murray as its new region manager.
Reid – who this year coached the Bendigo Dockers to a premiership in the Victorian FIDA League – will begin in his new position at AFLCV on January 14.
Calivil United faces a tough start to its 2019 season, with its first opponent defending premier Newbridge on Saturday, April 6.
