The Roos locked away their grand final berth by defeating Strathfieldsaye by five wickets at Dower Park on Tuesday.
The victory gave the Roos a perfect 4-0 record in the pool two preliminary matches and they can sit back and watch the final round unfold.
In pool one, Strathdale-Maristians edged out Eaglehawk in a one-run thriller to grab pole position for a grand final berth.
The Suns just need to defeat Bendigo United in the final round on January 8 to guarantee a berth in the final at the QEO on January 23.
Eaglehawk can still make the final if it defeats Huntly-North Epsom and the Suns lose to the Redbacks.
The Suns-Hawks game on Tuesday night went down to the wire.
Strathdale made a blistering start with the bat to be 1-58 off six overs, with Cam Taylor and Sam Johnston hitting 11 boundaries in the opening six overs.
Taylor’s dismissal for a quickfire 39 off 23 balls sparked a stunning collapse of 5-17.
After at one stage looking like posting 160-plus, the Suns needed marquee player Chris Sole (33 not out off 22 balls) to lift them from 6-74 to a competitive 8-131 off 20 overs.
After a brisk start with the bat, the Hawks had the clamps put on them by Suns’ star Cam Taylor (2-12 off four overs).
Opener Anthony West (39 off 37 balls) batted solidly for the Hawks, but they found themselves behind the eight-ball and with three overs to go they required 32 to win.
Some heavy hitting by Shaun Knott (27 off 17 balls) gave the Hawks a sniff and with the one over to go they required 10 runs to win.
Sam Johnston bowled the final over for the Suns and with one ball left Eaglehawk veteran Matt Fitt needed to hit a four to pinch victory.
Fitt hit the ball to deep midwicket where Taylor fielded and the Hawks scampered two runs, but were left one run short of what would have been a stunning win.
Aaron Monro (36 not out off 47 balls) was the other not out batsman for the Borough.
In the other pool one match, Bendigo United broke its duck when it defeated Bendigo by eight wickets.
The Redbacks did a great job with the ball to restrict the Goers to 7-119 off 20 overs.
Shane Koop (35) top scored for Bendigo, while Redback’s marquee player Gehan Seneviratne (2-14 off four) did damage with his leg-spinners.
Bendigo United wiped off the target inside 14 overs thanks to a brilliant 65 by Jayden Templeton and 32 not out from his brother Tyson Templeton.
In pool two, Kangaroo Flat overcame a mid-innings slump to defeat the previously unbeaten Strathfieldsaye.
Chasing the Jets’ modest total of 7-110, the Roos made a rapid start to be 0-33 off four overs.
Four quick wickets slowed their momentum and the run-rate required climbed to a run a ball before Brent Hamblin (23), Adam Burns (26 not out) and Nathan Hamblin (17 not out) saw the Roos home with an over to spare.
Bodee Scullie (38), Ben Devanny (2-17) and Chathura Damith (2-14) were the best performers for the Jets.
White Hills’ reign as T20 champions is over despite its six-wicket win over Sandhurst.
The Demons restricted Sandhurst to 5-119 off 20 overs. Tom Schultz (2-16) and Linton Jacobs (2-21) were the pick of the bowlers, while Taylor Beard (27) top scored for the Dragons.
White Hills’ skipper Mitch Winter-Irving (51 not out off 59 balls) batted through the innings, while Ollie Geary (35 off 22 balls) lifted the Demons in the middle overs with some big hitting.
