SPRING Gully’s star all-rounder Rhys Webb put on a batting masterclass with a brilliant 180 against West Bendigo in the Emu Valley Cricket Association on Saturday.
Webb’s 180 was the cornerstone of the reigning premiers smashing 9-371 off their 75 overs against the Redbacks at Spring Gully.
The Crows’ monster score came on the back of blasting 9-350 against United the previous round, while Webb passed the 500-run mark for the season with his fine innings.
Batting at No.3, Webb came in at 1-62 and remained at the crease until the Crows’ tally had reached 360.
His 180 came off just 182 balls and featured 21 boundaries and four sixes – one of which landed on the Spring Gully pavilion.
It was Webb’s second century of the season after he made 124 against Maiden Gully in round two, with his 2018-19 tally already 503 runs at an average of 71.8.
Overall, it was Webb’s fifth career century for the Crows in what’s his third season with the club.
Webb’s innings ended late in the day when he was trapped lbw by West Bendigo’s Gary Singh (4-72).
The Spring Gully innings also featured 70 from opener Jesse Marciano, who passed 50 for the third time in seven innings this season.
The Crows had one stage been 5-333 before the Redbacks claimed four late wickets, three of which were taken by Singh.
Spring Gully scored at 4.94 runs per over and only nine of the Redbacks’ 75 overs were maidens.
• For the second game in a row Emu Creek has already secured first innings points on day one.
After skittling United for 114, the Emus reached stumps already with a lead of 54, racing to 5-168 off just 28 overs at J.G. Edwards Oval.
Emu Creek’s aggressive stint at the crease was spearheaded by a blistering 85 off just 56 balls from Tyrone Downie, which followed on from his 64 last round when the Emus also had Maiden Gully beaten on day one.
Downie's 85 included 68 of his runs coming in fours (11) and sixes (four), with he and Brad Rowe (40) adding 107 for the second wicket.
Earlier, Luke Bennett’s fine season with the ball continued for the Emus with a haul of 4-24 off 12 overs taking his tally of wickets to 19, while Rowe took four catches.
United’s innings was derailed when it crashed from 2-55 to 6-60, with Bennett and Downie (2-22) taking two wickets apiece during the mid-innings blitz.
The Tigers have now been bowled out for first innings scores of 114, 84 and 132 in their past three games.
• Ladder-leader Sedgwick compiled 238 against Marong, with the mainstay of the innings veteran Andrew Sheehan.
Sheehan cracked an entertaining 81 off 76 with 11 fours and three sixes in what was a Rams’ innings that had plenty of accompanying contributions and two partnerships of 50-plus.
Sheehan and Lucas Baldwin (11) added 50 for the fifth wicket, while the experienced duo of Dustin Elliott (34) and Scott McKenzie (21 n.o.) put on 53 for the eighth wicket.
The Rams had looked poised to post a score of 250-plus when they were 7-234, before losing 3-4 to be all out in the 69th over.
Ryan Murphy (2-41), Duane Anderson (2-43), Dean Cosgriff (2-37) and Greg Toomey (2-53) all claimed two wickets each for the Panthers.
• Mandurang’s James Pietromonaco snared a five-wicket haul as the Rangas bowled California Gully out for 160.
Pietromnaco’s 5-50 off 14.2 overs was his fifth career bag of at least five wickets at the Rangas and he was well supported by Robert Johnson (3-14 off 10).
