Should the required approvals be granted, the annual gala parade – which the Bendigo Advertiser has been proud to sponsor for some time – will feature all of the city’s world-famous imperial dragons.
Our much-loved ‘first’ dragon, Loong, will join Sun Loong, the new Dai Gum Loong and many others as they wind their way through the Bendigo CBD.
And to add to the occasion, it will be the first time women carry one of the imperial dragons. Traditionally, only men have carried the male dragons – but for the first time, women will carry a male dragon (Dai Gum Loong).
You can find out more, here.
Well done, Bendigo – it’s because of you that we are able to have Dai Gum Loong join the gala parade from next year. Read more about the fundraising efforts and Dai Gum Loong, here.
And while we’re talking about exciting events in our city, don’t miss the Bendigo Art Gallery’s latest exhibition – Frida Kahlo, her pictures.
The exhibition offers rare insights into the life of the celebrated Mexican artist and features more than 250 of her most treasured photographs. It’s in Bendigo until February.
But as most of us know, much of our planning during the next few weeks is about Christmas. While this is a special time for some, for others it can be particularly difficult.
There are many organisations reaching out for assistance to help a growing number of people in our community who find the festive season overwhelming and stressful – and donations of food and gifts for all ages are much needed this week.
And along with those needs, there are many who will be alone during this time – so think about those you know and ask how you can make this time a little easier. Can someone join you for a meal, or can you pop in to visit? A small kindness can mean the world.
If you want to know how you can help, here’s a few suggestions:
Just as we saw the community rally to raise the funds to purchase the new Dai Gum Loong dragon mentioned above, we know this community rallies to support their own – and have no doubt many services will see an influx of donations this week. Thank you to those who have already helped, and to those who do in the coming weeks. And a big thank you to those coordinating responses during this time.
Meanwhile, if you’re after some Sunday reading, we’ve got a few links below to some of the content produced by the Bendigo Addy team this week.
Have a great Sunday.
