Singles matches are now underway at the ITTF World Junior Table Tennis Championships. The world’s best juniors will compete for a chance to be crowned as the singles champion among a field of players from countries from across the globe. “The singles matches are considered to be the more prestigious events of the tournament,” ITTF Oceania executive director Christian Holtz said. “It’s harder to predict who will win but among the favourites is the number one ranked junior boy Kanak Jha (US) and in the girls Adriana Diaz (Puerto Rico) who is the current Latin American champion. “And of course the Chinese players are also among the favourites.” Both the Chinese junior boys and girls won the team event finals on Wednesday night, with both teams defeating their Japanese opponents for gold medals. “As the two super powers of the sport, China and Japan have a long tradition of being rivals,” Holtz said. The tournament will continue at the Bendigo Stadium until Sunday. Have you signed up to the Bendigo Advertiser's daily newsletter and breaking news emails?
