Four CFA tankers attended the first blaze in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The fire started on the side of Prairie-Rochester Road and spread about 100 meters, consuming about 80 bales of hay in a nearby property.
A short time later, a second fire was sparked four kilometres westward, on the same road.
It is not yet clear how the fires ignited, but at this stage Detective Senior Constable Jason Hare of the Campaspe Crime Investigation Unit said they are being treated as suspicious.
“I suspect they are linked. It seems pretty unlikely that there would be two fires out there, in the same area, at the same time of night,” Detective Senior Constable Hare said.
