CASTLEMAINE’S Chloe Langley will represent Victoria at next year’s National Netball Championships after being selected in the final 17-under team.
Langley is among a squad of 12 who have made the state 17-under team for the 2019 National Netball Championships that will be held in Brisbane in April.
“I didn’t expect to get selected, so it’s really exciting,” Langley said on Friday.
“Seeing my name on the list was really surprising.”
Langley’s selection in the Victorian team continues a big year for the talented goal shooter, who in May was named the 2017-18 joint Netball Athlete of the Year for the Bendigo Academy of Sport.
“Chloe has worked extremely hard to get this opportunity,” Bendigo Academy of Sport netball head coach Melissa Ryan said.
“When she trained, she trained hard. She wasn’t the quickest and she wasn’t flashy, she just worked as hard as she could and took everything on board that we threw at her.
“I couldn’t be more proud of Chloe for being selected in the state 17-under team.”
With the club not fielding an A Grade side in the Bendigo Football-Netball League this year, 16-year-old Langley played in Castlemaine’s A Reserve team and finished runner-up in the best and fairest, despite missing six games.
A year earlier Langley won Castlemaine’s 17-under best and fairest in 2017.
As well as her selection in the Victorian 17-under team Langley has also just earned a spot in the 19-under side for the City West Falcons in the Victorian Netball League.
“Chloe is another example of why we need to continue to work for a VNL team based out of Bendigo. We have many Chloe’s in our region who get overlooked and we need to support and give them the opportunities to succeed,” Ryan said.
Langley – who is in Year 10 at Castlemaine Secondary College – is also making the move to play with South Bendigo in the BFNL next year.
Meanwhile, Kangaroo Flat goal shooter Ruby Barkmeyer has been named as a “training partner” in the Victorian 19-under netball squad.
