EAGLEHAWK, Golden Square and Strathdale-Maristians each have five players selected among the Bendigo District Cricket Association’s Melbourne Country Week trial squad of 32.
The squad’s first trial session will be held at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park next Monday from 6pm, while a second session will be held at Atkins Street on Wednesday, December 19.
From the squad of 32, a final team of 13 will be selected for Melbourne Country Week, in which Bendigo will be again competing in division two when the carnival begins on February 18.
“We’re confident we have a quality trial squad together,” Bendigo coach Shane Koop said on Wednesday.
“It has been really inspiring the response from the players when discussing their availabilities and genuine care for representing the BDCA.
“Unfortunately, some class players have work commitments, but at the end of the day work is a priority and we are respectful of that.”
The final team of 13 will be finalised early in January ahead of two lead-up practice matches against Gisborne in Bendigo on Sunday, January 13, and against Ballarat at Ballarat on Sunday, February 10.
The trial squad features five club captains – Eaglehawk’s Cory Jacobs, Kangaroo Flat’s Brent Hamblin, Strathdale-Maristians’ Ben DeAraugo, Strathfieldsaye’s Ben Devanny and White Hills’ Mitch Winter-Irving.
Bendigo’s Xavier Ryan and Golden Square’s Ryan Hartley, who have recently returned to the BDCA from Premier Cricket, are in the squad, as is Sandhurst batsman Ash Gray, who has just earned a berth in the Victorian team for the Australian Country Cricket Championships in January.
