Pyramid Hill College students Fionne Garchitorena and Jorja Moon have been developing the Farm Safe Sleeve, a high-vis shirt complete with sleeves designed to easily come off if caught in machinery.
Pressed studs attach the sleeve to the vest - an idea their principal Fiona Moon said is a simple but clever response to a common safety issue in the agriculture industry.
Last weekend Fionne and Jorja travelled to Sydney, where their idea caught the eye of judges in a Brilliant Business Kids Festival competition.
“It’s pretty exciting. We don’t really get these kinds of opportunities,” Jorja said.
“We weren’t even expecting to win, we just were there for the opportunity. So to come home with a win was pretty cool.”
Jorja and Fionne’s work has been a school term in the planning, with students conceiving of and developing ideas with the help of local business mentors.
From there, they moved through the regional round of the competition and onto the Sydney stage, competing against other students from across Australia.
The goal was to take students through the process needed to develop a product, Pyramid Hill teacher Lizzie Fox said.
It was also a chance for students to mix with like-minded students, as well as with representatives from Australia’s industry, academia, government and community groups.
“They didn’t actually have to make the shirt for the program,” Ms Fox said.
“It was really thinking about what entrepreneurs do as part of their process, how they develop their ideas and then how they pitch it to businesses in an effective way.”
Fionne said there was not yet a plan to develop the product further.
Yet, as she and Jorja returned to school following the trip and recovered from their unexpected win, their teachers were pointing out that it was still early days.
