GLITTERING GOLDFIELDS

After the success from last years event, this LGBTIQ+ Youth formal event is back and will showcase talent in Castlemaine. 

Last year, Castlemaine was hit hard by the debate on marriage equality and there were concerns about the effect this would have on LGBTIQ+ youth. 

The Glittering Goldfields Committee formed shortly afterwards and, with crowdfunding, raised almost $7000 to run its first ever The Glittering Goldfields Queer Formal.

This year’s formal has a ‘cheesy prom’ theme. It will be all-things-rainbow for those aged 12-20 years. 

The evening provides a safe environment for queer youth to have a fun night out. There will also be food, local DJs, performers and a dance competition. 

The event is drug, alcohol and smoke-free and is supervised by adult volunteers (known affectionately as the Goldfields Guardians).

JDRF ONE WALK

Each year, JDRF One Walks bring together about a million people to raise money for life-changing T1D research.

This success is only possible because of the support, commitment and strength of local communities.

Show the strength of your #JDRFbluearmy by getting your family, friends and colleagues together for a great day.

Bring a picnic blanket and walking shoes for a beautiful walk and then enjoy lunch and children's activities. 

The stars of the day are those living with T1D and there will be orange caps to recognise these champions.

GREATER BENDIGO AGAINST FAMILY VIOLENCE

Show your support against family violence at this community event. 

The event features key speakers and community action showcase – walking against violence at 12.30pm.

CFA OPEN DAYS

CFA branches are preparing for the fire season by hosting open days. 

To get you ready for when the sparks fly, there will also be street corner meetings and demonstrations in coming months. 

Golden Square’s open day includes demonstrations, information, colouring for children and a barbecue.

Maiden Gully’s open day allows for you to chat about your preparations, see demonstrations, and enjoy a barbecue and children’s activities.

GOLDFIELDS TRAIL RUN

Join in for one of the most scenic and challenging trail runs in the heart of Victoria’s Gold Rush country. 

The Goldfields Trail Run is hosted in conjunction with the TreX Cross Triathlon Series, which together make up a weekend of off-road events for the entire family.

At Crusoe Reservoir, the courses challenge runners with a diverse array of terrain and scenery.

NATIVE SEEDS

If you’re looking to learn more about local native plants head along to Mount Alexander Shire Council’s free sustainable living workshop.

This workshop includes Ian Higgins (Friends of Campbells Creek) demonstrating how to collect native plant seed, and you’ll have the opportunity to help collect seed for coming Landcare projects.

Wear a hat and sturdy boots and don’t forget to bring a water bottle. This workshop is suitable for people of all ages. Free event.

WALK TO D’FEET MND

This big fundraising event raises awareness, provides care, support, information and equipment to help those with motor neurone disease. 

The walk starts at 10.30am, with registration and entertainment on from 9.30am.

The walk is about 3km and suitable for everyone with wheelchair and pram access.

FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL

Feeling peckish? You won’t want to miss out on this three-day food-lovers’ event. 

The Bendigo Food Truck Festival is back for its third and biggest event ever. 

The festival features more trucks, music, entertainment, better facilities and a different layout. 

Trucks included in the event are Billy van Creamy, Bites On Wheels, C'est Chick, Flame Tree Pizza and many, many more.

POP AND POUR FESTIVAL

Looking to travel a little further this weekend?

PETER SHEAHAN’S WALK UP

Peter Sheahan's Walk Ups has been raising money for charities for more than eight years.

At the fundraising event, all door proceeds will go to  the Australian NPC Disease Foundation Inc. 

The afternoon features all kinds of music such as Dawn Gerish, John Tehan, Terry Andison, Kevin O’Hara, Floreena Forbes, Ken Bice and much more.

There will also be all kinds of poetry, yarns and a raffle and lucky door prizes.

ONCE AND FOR ALL

At a local cemetery, a coming collaboration between sculptor Eliza-Jane Gilchrist and writer and actor Mark Penzak will explore the stories behind the gravestones.

The event will start with a tour of the cemetery, telling the stories behind notable graves and monuments. 

The event trials of a form of theatre where visuals tells as much of the story as the words.

It’s not a classic play; rather, collaborators are trying to bring their audience into the atmosphere of the cemetery.

BRAHMS AT ST PAUL’S 

The Bendigo Symphony Orchestra conclude their 2018 season with a performance of Brahms 1st Symphony.

The performance will also include Beethoven's Coriolan Overture and orchestral songs by Mozart, Handel and Wagner, with soprano Brenda McDougall.

This concert will be Rohan Phillips' last performance after 10 years as music director.

MUSK FARM

Open Gardens Victoria is opening the much-loved Musk Farm garden at Musk (near Daylesford).

Twenty years ago, the late Stuart Rattle transformed a dilapidated school into a property surrounded by semi-formal gardens comprising of 14 garden “rooms”.

Subsequent owners have continued to maintain and add to this beautiful 3.5-acre garden.

The opening of this garden features wine tastings, cheese, Devonshire teas, sculpture, botanic art and plant sales.

The garden can only be accessed by a vintage train ride from Daylesford Railway station or a bus shuttle service from Daylesford Secondary College.

There will be no parking on site. Entry $12, students $5, under-18 free.

SATURDAY NIGHT DANCE 

Enjoy a like-minded dancing community at this fun, family-friendly, dancing event.  

On Saturday, there will be a dance at the Spring Gully Hall, with music by Rod McKenzie.

There will be a good program and a home-cooked supper. The evening also features a raffle and prizes.

EXHIBITIONS

SCULPTURE EXHIBITION AND TRAIL

In recent weeks, some awe-inspiring outdoor sculptures have been installed on the lawns of the Hanging Rock Winery in preparation for the Art in the Vines Sculpture Exhibition and Trail.

One of Australia’s most well-known sculptors, Geoffrey Bartlett, has signed on to participate and has created his piece “Embrace #2” especially for the Art in the Vines.

Other sculptors who have pieces on display have their work on show at the likes of The Met Museum in New York, The National Gallery of Australia and other international spaces.

FLORAL TRANSIENCE 

Sharon Greenaway is a photographic artist exploring the goldfield flowers.

The native flowers in Bendigo can be small and have a short flowering time, therefore not many people may see them. 

Greenaway aims to highlight the flowers’ beauty in order to help with their conservation.

As well as the photographic art pieces on the wall, there will also be some of Greenaway’s wearable art.

GROWING UP IN ECHUCA –  WHAT KIDS DID FOR FUN

The exhibition “Growing Up in Echuca – What Kids Did for Fun” runs until the end of February. 

The focus of the exhibition is connecting today’s kids to the yesteryear of their parents and grandparents and engaging families with their history.

GOTHIC BEAUTY

Curated by Tansy Curtin and Jessica Bridgfoot (and as a Bendigo Art Gallery exclusive), this exhibition takes a look into early Victorian rituals of mourning, as early as the 1800s.

The artists featured in the exhibition range from Jane Burton, Bill Henson and Janet Beckhouse just to name a few.  

This exhibition draws on works from the gallery's historic collections, as well as loaned pieces and works from contemporary artists.
