The team was comprised of Year 9 and 10 students and coached by Eleanor Haring.
“Catherine McAuley College is so proud of the girls and their achievement,” Haring said.
“From a coaching perspective, they’re a bunch of girls who have spent a lot of time playing together and that clearly translates into their games on the court.
“They’ve worked very hard for it and it all came together yesterday. It was a great achievement for them and something they should all be very proud of.”
During game one CMC played Sacred Heart College from Yarrawonga where the girls got off to a “blistering start” and by the end of the first half were up 18-2.
They continued the momentum in the second half to win 48-16.
Game two was against Sports Academy School Maribyrnong where CMC had a “challenging” first half with the girls taking the lead 20-12 by half time.
During the second half the team came together to outplay their opponents with a final score of 45-26.
For game three against Epping, CMC applied the pressure early in the match to walk off the court at half time with a 14 point lead.
During the second half the pressure became even stronger with CMC unmatched to win the game 58-17.
Game four was the grand final against Lavalla Catholic College Traralgon, with CMC struggling to get off to a solid start, the scores were neck-and-neck during the first half.
For what proved to be a “highly tactical game” a three-pointer by Sahara Rodda gave CMC a one point lead going into half time 17-16.
Despite Lavalla Catholic College getting off to a better start in the second half, the CMC girls dug deep to take the lead.
Lavalla tried their hardest to make a comeback with just two minutes left on the clock, but CMC controlled the game and were crowned Victorian State Champions with a final score of 34-29.
