READ MORE – Spring Gully v Marong | PHOTOS
WEST Bendigo’s Travis O’Connell has taken over the mantle as the season’s leading run-scorer in the EVCA after notching a century in the Redbacks’ win over California Gully on Saturday.
Beginning the day unbeaten on 38, O’Connell added a further 97 to take his tally to 135 in the Redbacks’ total of 303 in reply to the Cobras’ 207 at California Gully.
O’Connell now has 317 runs for the season at an average of 105, with his ton the third hundred he has made in his past 12 games dating back to round six of last season.
While O’Connell was the mainstay of the innings, the Redbacks also had Darren De Marchi (48), captain Brendon Lummis (35), both playing against their former team, and Zac Makeham (25) chip in with contributions.
Bradley Smith (4-57) and Jordan Knight (3-56) combined for seven wickets for the Cobras, while it was Jarrod Whelan (1-20) who claimed the scalp of O’Connell when he was caught by Kobe Galvin.
• Captain Alex Sutton’s century for Spring Gully was his first for the Crows and came in a comfortable victory for the reigning premier over Marong.
Sutton compiled 105 not out off 149 balls with six boundaries and five sixes as the Crows answered the Panthers’ 9-186 with 9-286 to win by 100 runs at Spring Gully.
Batting at No.5, Sutton began his knock with the Crows 3-89, with his innings including a 60-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Thomas Perrin (26) that guided Spring Gully over the line.
Richard Murphy (2-6), Jeremy Ross (2-46), Ryan Murphy (2-51) and Andrew Gladstone (2-51) all snared two wickets for Marong.
• Sedgwick maintained its unblemished start, defeating Maiden Gully by 24 runs.
Half-centuries to Lucas Baldwin (60) and opener Greg Thomas (57) helped the Rams to 8-225 in response to the Lions’ 7-201.
The Lions – who had Dallas Gill chime in with 3-27 – were in the contest when the dismissal of Simon Marwood (6) had the Rams 4-96 before Thomas and Baldwin batted Sedgwick back into a solid position with a 65-run stand for the fifth wicket.
• Mandurang inflicted Emu Creek’s first defeat of the season.
Resuming at 4-145 in reply to the Emus’ 159, the Rangas added a further 86 runs before being bowled out for 231.
Cain Ladiges (37) and Ben Rodda (22) were at the crease when the winning runs were hit for the Rangas, with the experienced pair adding 56 for sixth wicket.
Captain Todd Brown’s 3-39 were the best bowling figures for the Emus, who were 4-80 in their second innings.
• Next round – West Bendigo v Marong, Sedgwick v Mandurang, Emu Creek v Maiden Gully, United v Spring Gully, California Gully v Sedgwick (Sunday one-dayer).
