Nick Collins suffered significant injuries in the crash and was transported to Melbourne in a critical condition.
A swift response from family and friends to raise funds to help the family with travel, meal and accommodation costs has already raised $4500.
Funds raised will also go towards treatment, rehabilitation and other costs associated with Nick's recovery, along with accommodation.
Family friend Matt Rimmer, who organised the fundraiser, said the strong support reflected the love the community had for the Collins family.
“We're close to the family, my wife teaches him. Nick is one of those characters who it is easy to develop a friendship with,” Matt said.
“(News of the crash) really tugged at our heartstrings and we wanted to do all we could. We think the world of Nick and his family and we wanted to help in a practical way.
“Even before you think about the cost of rehab, there’s the cost of travel, meals and accommodation in Melbourne. We want to help ease that burden.”
Nick is a popular student at Victory Christian College and plays soccer with Bendigo City FC in the National Premier League.
Mr Rimmer said community support had come in all forms and the response was fantastic.
“It’s been phenomenal, we are greatly encouraged and appreciative of a community that is so generous and kind,” he said.
“Its an expression of the type of character that young man has that people have responded this way. It shows they are a beautiful family.”
It is also hoped the fundraiser can help Nick return to the active life he had prior to the crash.
Nick’s parents Tim and Veronica Collins said in a statement they were overwhelmed with the support.
“It has been very encouraging to Nick,” they said. “He loves his teammates and all his friends and misses them all. He has been overwhelmed by all the messages received.
“We want to express thanks to Victory Christian College community who provided meals and support for the family.”
“Nick was wearing a helmet and his chest plate. One of the greatest lessons we have had is the value of safety of equipment. It made the difference on this occasion.”
