Herbert fired a two-over par 74 on day one of the European Tour Championship in Dubai.
The 22-year-old had four bogeys and two birdies to be eight shots behind early leader Jordan Smith.
Martin was in a tie for 83rd after the opening round of the Australian Open in Sydney.
On a tough day to make birdies, Martin shot a three-over par 75 on the testing Lakes layout.
The former Australian amateur champion looked like he was in for a long day when he bogeyed three of his opening four holes.
However, he maintained his composure to play the remaining 14 holes in level par.
Martin has the advantage of an early tee time for Friday’s second round.
Korean star Byeong Hun An leads the tournament at five-under par – one shot clear of Matt Jager and David Micheluzzi.
