WEST Bendigo’s new women’s cricket team is off to a winning start.
Playing in the opening round of Goulburn Murray’s inaugural women’s competition, the Redbacks defeated Kyabram Fire Brigade Red at Ken Wust Oval last Sunday.
“It’s a modified game of Twenty20 that is a bit similar to indoor cricket in that you bat for four overs as a pair, lose runs if you go out and you get to bowl a couple of overs,” West Bendigo’s Deonee O’Connell said on Wednesday.
“So everyone gets the chance to have a bat and a bowl and it really is all about inclusiveness.”
West Bendigo made 86 off its 20 overs batting first, which featured a top score of 26 from O’Connell.
Kyabram Fire Brigade Red was restricted to 9-70 in reply.
Also among the eight teams competing in the competition is Maiden Gully, which lost a thriller by five runs to Kyabram Fire Brigade White at home.
Maiden Gully finished at 9-116 in reply to Kyabram Fire Brigade White’s 6-121.
Also participating in the competition are Leitchville-Gunbower, Shepparton Youth Club United, Nathalia and Echuca.
The competition will run over six rounds.
